ABOUT FEEDING YOUR DOG DAIRY PRODUCTS

One thing to remember when you're making your dog any homemade treats is that some dogs can't properly digest milk/dairy products. (This condition, which some humans also have, is called "lactose intolerance". When the affected individual eats or drinks dairy products, they get gas, bloating, crampy pain and/or diarrhea.)  Most puppies & dogs do enjoy the taste of cheese. But if you choose to feed your dog any dairy products, don't give them a large amount.

Most premium brands of dog food have been scientifically proven to be balanced, nutritious diets. (These brands will be labeled "has passed the AAFCO  feeding trials for....stage of life.") So when you feed these to your dog, they are already getting all of the calories & essential nutrients. Remember that table scraps & other treats are best used as treats.

Bacon Bites

photo: Bacon Bites    Wondering what to do with the left over holiday Turkey? This very simple recipe uses a little bacon for flavor and the dogs love them. They look like brownies except they're light golden brown & they make the kitchen smell great.  Preparation takes only 15-20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (500 g) turkey (bones removed)
  • 1 lb (500 g) pork
  • 4 slices of bacon
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups (750 ml) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal

Directions

  • Shred the turkey, pork, bacon and eggs in your food processor & set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the turkey/pork/bacon/egg mixture with your hands & mix well. You can mix everything in a food processor if you have one that is big enough.
  • (Skip this step if you mixed all of the ingredients in a food processor.) Knead dough in a large bowl until the dough ball isn't sticky anymore.  It takes about 2 minutes.
  • Lightly grease a cookie sheet (9"x15")
  • Use a rolling pin to roll out dough in the cookie sheet until it's 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
  • Use a pizza cutter to slice the dough into 1 inch squares
  • Bake for 1 hour in oven preheated to 375° F (190°C). Note: if you decide to use meat in this recipe that is already cooked, cut the cooking time down to 45 minutes.
  • Cool before giving any to your dog. Store the rest in the refrigerator.

GARY'S BRITTANY BISCUITS

Although neither Gary nor Carla have tasted these biscuits, all of our Brittanys seem to really enjoy them. They are dark brown, smell great & have the same consistency as meatballs. This recipe makes enough biscuits to fill 2 baking sheets.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (500 g) boneless chicken
  • 1 lb (500 g) lean ground beef
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 3 cups (750 ml) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (250 ml) oats, uncooked (we use the Quaker's Harvest Crunch Apple & Cinnamon variety)
  • 1 cup (250 ml) water
You could modify this recipe by adding 2 or 3 slices of cheddar cheese.

Directions

  • Combine the beef, chicken & beaten eggs. Mix well in your food processor (or blender) & set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour & oats. Next, gradually add in beef/chicken/egg mixture with your hands & mix well.
  • Add water & stir until you have a sticky dough.
  • Divide dough in half, so it's easier to work with. Knead dough on a well floured surface, adding flour until the dough ball isn't sticky anymore.  It takes about 2 minutes.
  • Use a rolling pin to roll out dough ball until it's 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
  • Use a cookie cutter to cut biscuits. Place biscuits on a baking sheet sprayed with PAM/vegetable oil.
  • Bake for 1 hour in oven preheated to 350° F (180°C). Note: if you decide to use meat in this recipe that is already cooked, cut the cooking time down to 45 minutes.
  • Cool before giving any to your dog. Store the rest in the refrigerator.

MO'S SEED COOKIES

Mo included flax seed in this recipe because they're supposedly good for a dog's coat. None of the dogs complained about these golden brown cookies. And they made nice gifts for other dog owners.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups cornmeal
  • 4 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup flax seed
  • 1/2 cup sesame seed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil

Directions

  • Put all ingredients into a large bowl & blend until the ingredients are just combined. Allow dough to rest for 15 minutes before rolling it out on a lightly floured surface. Roll dough out to a uniform 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into (dog bone) shapes with cookie cutters. Bake in oven pre-heated to 350° for about 20-25 minutes.
  • You can air dry overnight to make them crunchier. They do freeze well.
