The Field Test |
|
Field testing is used to grade a dogs hunting ability in an impartial manner using standardized criteria.
A field test is a test of your dogs hunting ability and to a lesser degree your ability as a handler/trainer.
Unlike the field trial, all dogs are handled on foot. Each dog must locate game and establish a point. Dogs must achieve a passing score on all tested objectives.
The most important training for your dog, in additional to the basic obedience commands is the ability to whoa. All the training to complete the requirements of the field test will be derived from the whoa command. From the whoa training, you should be able to make your dog point staunchly. This will require lots of experience in front of birds so that your dog may continually improve.
